The One With Taipo Street Cart Noodle – Incredible Value, Incredible Taste

Street cart noodle is undoubtedly one of the cultural icons of Hong Kong. Made popular in the 1950s by street vendors peddling their wares using carts, street cart noodle continues to be a popular staple for Hong Kong today, and can be found everywhere.

I am a BIG fan of street cart noodle. Cart noodle is a kind of à la carte meal – you pick the kind of noodles that you want, the soup base you fancy, and the kind of ingredients you like to go with your noodle. The sheer options available can be mind-boggling especially to tourists, but it is a great big joy of an eat for gluttons like me.

So when my friend brought me to this nondescript stall at Taipo for a spot of street cart noodle for lunch one day, I couldn’t resist.

And oh my, what a bargain! There was a queue of course, but that’s mainly because the very reasonable price charged. You pay based on what kind of ingredients you want to go with your noodle.

The One With Prima Taste Singapore Laksa – A Taste of (My Second) Home

So recently a good friend of mine passed me a pack of five Prima Taste Singapore Laksa delivered all the way from Singapore. I first heard about this instant noodle brand during my last trip back to Singapore, and since then I have developed quite a liking to it. However the same instant noodle sold in Hong Kong was ridiculously expensive, to the tune of HK$27-HK$30 per pack. So to say I was deliriously happy with this unexpected surprise from my friend would have been quite an understatement.

One weekend afternoon I decided to have that for lunch and shared that on Instagram and Facebook. But my friends were quick to point out that what I did was not a true Singapore laksa.

The One With A Revisit To Yung Kee Restaurant At Central

After a disastrous first attempt at Yung Kee some time back, I was understandably hesitant about visiting again. One can hardly make a full dinner out of century eggs and sliced gingers, delicious as they were.

But since it was late at night and it was a treat (thanks, Wayne), I went ahead and was in for a surprise.

Knowing that the century eggs will be exceptional, I ordered an extra portion right away. It was heavenly as expected. I think I gorged on three of this beauty.

The One With Traditional Chinese Noodle

What is it about Chinese and their tendency to pick-and-match their food? There is this distinct food culture in Hong Kong where you get to fix your meal the way you want from a variety of food and condiments.

It is something like “chap chye peng” in Singapore, only better.

Traditional Chinese Noodle @ Tsim Sha Tsui

The way to do it is this. You choose the main soup base you want, and then add on whatever you wish at incremental prices. The end result can be fascinatingly delicious… or atrociously laughable. It helps, of course, if you read Chinese.
