The One With September 11th

Today is September 11. It has been nine years. The wound might have healed but the scar remains.

Do you remember what happened on this fateful day?

If you are not an American, you and I will not fully understand the repercussion of the terrible, terrible event which took place on Sept 11, 2001. When thousands lost their lives in the name of religion extremism, which cast a shadow over the entire civilised world.

When I was in New York earlier this year, I was determined to visit the National 911 Memorial Centre. In all honesty I wasn’t prepared for what was waiting in store for me. To have learned what happened that day. To listen to, over and over again, how the dying accepted their fate and bid farewell to their loved ones. To discover how those left behind picked up the pieces and moved on.

My heart was in pieces.

The outpouring griefs and anger from the world, regardless of race and religion, were palpable through a series of writing beautifully commemorated at this site. As I read pages and pages of raw emotions and sincere wishes from humanity, tears started rolling down my cheek. I wasn’t the only one.

There is reason why they provided tissue on the table.

No matter what bad things you can say about them, America is a great country, and New York is a testament to what a great nation this is. I was fortunate to be able to carve a piece of memory for myself. Maybe one day, I will be a part of this wonderful city.

On this day, I stand with the people of America to remember those who have passed on. May they rest in peace.
