Cloverfield – How different is it from Godzilla?

Cloverfield, the movie

Ever since I read about the effective viral marketing effort of Cloverfield, I have been very intrigued about the movie. The word-of-mouth is that the trailer and posters and all other advertisements promoting this “monster” movie gave no clue about what this movie is all about.

Most deduced that it is a monster movie, but have no idea what monster is that. Many drew comparison (and speculation) to the movie Godzilla. Thousands of blogs speculate what Cloverfield is all about.

Whenever I come across postings on my blogroll talking about the movie, I quickly skip through it. I don’t want any spoilers, and I want an authentic virgin monster experience with the movie Cloverfield.

(Incidentally, the word Cloverfield doesn’t mean anything. Nothing related to the monster at all. It is just a code name given by the U.S. Government to the monster attack on New York City)

Here’s a little synopsis of the movie Cloverfield:

“Five young New Yorkers throw their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city. Told from the point of view of their video camera, the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most surreal, horrifying event of their lives.” – Source: IMDB

So I went to catch the movie at Cineleisure yesterday, and boy… am I in for a treat! Right from the word go, I was mersmerised by the portrayal on how young New Yorkers live in the big city. The party, the friends, the career, the love affairs. It gave me an insight on what I might get myself into in a few years’ time.

And then the first boom resounded throughout the city, and the horror began.

Heath Ledger – Dead!

It’s true. Heath Ledger, the hunk of an actor, best known with his role as the gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain, was found dead in New York:

The New York Times said Ledger was discovered by the housekeeper and a masseuse who arrived in the afternoon for an appointment. They knocked on the door, but “when no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom and found Mr. Ledger naked and unconscious on a bed. They shook him, but he did not respond,” the Times said.

I am a big fan of Brokeback Mountain, and the demise of one of its lead actors saddened me greatly. Heath was astounding in his role. I remembered crying silently during the final scene, when he looked at the intertwined shirts and cried softly.

He will be fondly remembered.

(It’s time for me to get the DVD)

Tornado at Orchard Road?

Tornado at Orchard Road?

This view out of my office window got me all excited. Thunder flashes in the sky. Heavy clouds roll onto the city.

It reminds me of the movie “Day After Tomorrow”, which I absolutely loved to bits. Yeah, I am a natural disaster freak.

But confined to movies, of course!

I am Legend

28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later… all marks the sub-niche movies of the “virus takes over the world” variety. The latest addition to this is I Am Legend.

No one can blame you to be caught up by the frenzy of this Christmas movie, with it’s huge advertising all over the place, if you are anything like yours truly. Sadly speaking, the only thing you’ll remember from the show is the stellar performance of Smith and its faithful dog.

The year was 2012, three years after the supposed-cure for cancer turns human into light-averting, flesh-eating, rabies-infected hives of monsters trolling the earth for “food” after the sun goes down. Will Smith, playing the role of soldier-turned-scientist Robert Neville, turned in an incredible performance of the sole survivor of New York City.

Hairspray DVD

Finally it’s here!

I have been waiting for the Hairspray DVD for very long now. Been obsessed by the feel good soundtrack and amazing dance routine, even since watched it in cinema sometime ago.

Oh God, I can’t wait to get home and watch it, over and over again!

That MDA Rap

The local blogosphere was recently swamped with this rap video done by the big shots at Media Development Authority.

When I first watched the clip, I was laughing away. I can see why so many bloggers got a bad taste in the mouth. The long thread of comments on the YouTube page shows the public sentiment towards the said video.

But I was thinking, is it that bad?

Granted, the lyrics are pretty bad. The rap tune is (supposedly) ripped off from some other sources, or something.

However these big shots whom did the dance and rap to what is obviously foreign to them must be applauded. I mean, how many people actually dare to do it? One even donned a superman uniform!

(God, now that was rather hideous. Whose idea was that?!)

Now on second thoughts… what is the reason behind the video? From the reactions that I can see, sure, now everyone knows what MDA is for. I can’t really think of any other possible reasons… and if my guess is right, then for God sake, isn’t there any other better way to convey the same message?

Anyway… effort must be complimented on. Even if it is seemingly bad.

I still enjoyed the video, anyway :D

Smallville’s Best Episode Ever

There is nothing that tug at my heartstrings like a good christmas movie.

In this case, it was more of a christmas episode. Season 5 of Smallville presents Lexmas, a gripping, warm “teaser” that foretold why Lex Luthor made the decisions he will made.

(Warning: Spoilers ahead)

A fatal shotout on Chirstmas Eve landed Lex at hospital in of a coma state which will make him a cripple. As he drifted in and out of conciousness, Lex travelled into the future, as his dead mom showed him what could have been if “he made the right choices”

Lex is married to Lana Lang (!!!) and bore a sun named Alexander. Lana is pregnant with a baby girl named Lily. Clark Kent worked for Daily Planet and seem to be with Chloe Sullivan. Jonathan Kent is the state senator. The Kent regards Lex as part of the family. Lex turned his back to his father Lionel Luther seven years ago and now lead a normal (read: not rich) life.

Disaster strikes when Lana lost a lot of blood when she gives birth to Lily. Lex, desperate to save the love of his life, went to his father for help. His father ignored the plead of his son – as a consequence of his decision not to be a part of the Luthors.

Lex was devastated with grief as Lana die in his watch. He turned to his mother, anguished for an explanation.

“This is a life of full love”

“No, this is a lifelong of pain after my wife dies!”

At this point Lex Luthor woke up for his coma… and made the decision to reverse fate.

“You know the secret for happy ever after? It’s money. And power. With these, everything else can be secured.”

So now we know why Lex Luthor became the fabled villain of the story. Not out of greed or ambition – but because of the love of his life.

Gripping, really. I can’t wait to see the rest of Smallville seasons. Apparently in Singapore the DVDs are available up to Season 5. So I bought the Season 6 off Amazon. I knew Season 7 is airing in the States.

I am so hooked on Smallville – like you cannot believe it!
