The One With Guidelines For The Novice Food Blogger

Dinner at Sushi One, Causeway Bay

If you are a social media junkie like yours truly and live in this part of the world, chances are you would have heard of the food blogging ethic fiasco that involves renowned Singapore food blogger Lady Iron Chef and Hungry Epicurean, and one chi chi dining establishment at Joo Chiat Road, Private Affairs. If you don’t, I have compiled a list of resources as foot note to this blog post that will give you all the information you need.

That’s me, the ever helpful and resourceful novice food blogger.

The One With The Letter To My 16-Year-Old Self

The One With The Letter To My 16-Year-Old Self

Dear Me,

Hi! This is your 30-year-old self writing. You’ll never guess, but fourteen years from now, there is this book which got insanely popular and inspired thousands to write a letter to their younger selves.

So don’t worry, you are not getting any crazier than you already are. You are just trying to blend in with the crowd.

Surprised that you are still doing that? I know… right now, you are still trying to figure out who you are, and how to fit in with your new classmates. Guess what… you will still be doing that when you are 20. Or 30.

The One With The Forgotten Bruno

Back in 2008, I brought a gold metallic bear I nicknamed as Bruno. The idea, was to document it’s journey to take on one day at a time throughout 2008.

The project fizzled out after a mere two months or… I had the chance to revisit the blog again, and was roaring with the absurdity of some of the posts I did! Here are some highlights.

Whoa! Such expensive shoes, so easily get chaffed one. Tsk!

Killed by longggg conference call

Bruno is in a dark, gloomy place. Sigh…

Whoa! There is a new lappy at work!

Bruno is feeling all himbotic

Christmas is in the air

Christmas in Hong Kong

This is the season of jolly giving, fa la la la la la…

Being in Hong Kong as the city prepares itself for the Christmas season is like watching an old damn putting up her glitziest jewelery for that one final ball. Nothing but the best for her guests.

I am glad that I will be in Hong Kong for the festive period, although probably I will be seeing snow in Europe right before that.

And if you are wondering what I would like, I would really love one of these. Or better still, engage them for me.

I don’t mind being in the queue.

Blogging Connection

My Google Reader

It has been more than a month since I last read my Google Reader. That felt like an abandoned inbox with tonnes of unread emails.

The folder I opened first? Blog updates from my friends.

Suddenly I felt as if I am still part of their world. Emotions, experiences and hopes from wherever they are at overwhelmed me as I read through the feeds, one after another.

It dawned on me that at this time and age, Internet is the one way for me to stay connected with the people I know in life. Yeah, Facebook is the de facto platform, but blogging shows much more depth on how your friends are doing and feeling.

So if you have not been updating your blog, please do. For I miss you and I want to know how you are doing.

A Blogging Dilemma

A Blogging Dilemma

If written word is the window to one’s soul, I shudder to think what kind of view you get through mine.

I used to think that blogging is an expression of your emotional being. States of elation, despair and frustrations flow with your words, reaching out to your readers in hope that they will feel and share your feelings.

But as I trawled back the history of this blog, I realised my writings are horrendous at best, stupefying at worst… save for a couple of the more melodramatic posts.

I could justify my failure by saying I am being myself in my own space, but whom am I kidding? I yearn to be understood, and I should write to be understood.

Back to the drawing writing board now.

About RSS Subscribers & Such

I was checking up my Feedburner account to see if they offer email subscription service, and I was in for a surprise.

No, it is not the email service. That is a given. I am surprised by the number of RSS subscribers that I have for this blog.

A total of 29. I know, to some of you this is a very small number, nothing to boast about, but for me, it is, when I only have like a miserable 4 subscribers earlier this year.

I guess the frequency I blog nowadays and the plugin for WordPress RSS feeds must have everything to do with the increase. LOL. Anyway, I would like to invite you to RSS feed to follow my blog updates using a RSS reader, or you can also be updated via email alerts too.

All this information is duplicated from my subscription page.

New Look

I have decided. That I will go for a new look for my blog.

The current theme, while functional, is way too cluttered. I need one that is two-colum, optimised for advertising, and yet wide enough for me to put Flickr photos.

Found a couple of theme that most likely will sit my needs, but I welcome suggestions.

And if anyone wants to be in for the first six advertising spots on my blog, you are welcome to write to me. Just click on “Contact Razlan” on the left.

Free, of course. I just want to test things out.

And I have been dis-spirited lately with the lack of interaction on my blog. If you are reading this, and have not been commenting for the longest time, a simple “hello” won’t kill you. Let me know you are alive!

Update: Okay, template updated. Now the whole thing looks a bit dull. I think I really need to start off every post with a coloured photos. Hmmm…. anyway! Tweaking and editing in progress.

I am a comment whore

Every blogger’s dream is to have huge traffic to their blog.

And every problogger’s dream is to have a crowd of active, engage audience to their blog.

What do I mean by active and engaged? Such audience are ones who return to your blog very frequently, comment on your blog posts, tell for their friends about your blog, and subscribe to your RSS feed and email newsletter.

From my webstats, I know there are visitors coming to this blog. Some of you came here for the first time (welcome!) and some came here periodically. Here’s what my stats programme tells me about you in January 2008:

So, I know you guys are out there reading this. But knowing you guys through my stats is like… reading personal classifieds trying to find the right one, you know? I don’t know what you like, what you don’t like, what makes you come here, etc. etc. All I see are lines of text, with clues of the person you are. Good luck to me trying to know you better.

Actually, this is my long winded way to tell you this. I want to get to know you, and I can only do so if you leave a comment on my posts.

Yes, leaving a comment. That’s all you need to do, so that I can have a conversation with you. Here’s why you should leave a comment:

PayPerPost – Earn $$$ By Blogging

I am sure you have noticed some new posts that cropped up recently on my blog, on topics that I usually won’t blog here. In the interest of full disclosure, such posts are actually sponsored posts from the PayPerPost network. Basically, what you do is to respond to “opportunities” posted by advertisers in the PayperPost marketplace by blogging. Then you submit your post for review.

If your post is accepted, you will be paid for the amount offered. As simple as that!

I have been on the system for about a week now. So far did three posts only; however, all three have been accepted and I will be paid! Here are the details (click for bigger image).

My PayPerPost earnings so far...
