The One With Souvla – My First Greek Experience in Hong Kong

It was only when I started to blog this that I realised that Souvla was my first Greek experience in Hong Kong… coz Greek wasn’t on my Food Category list!

While I am certainly no stranger to Greek food, my usual encounters were usually restricted to the occasional Greek salad, of which I enjoy the feta cheese a lot. Souvla has been on my radar for some time since it was opened, thanks to its rather active Twitter account @souvlaemp. One wintry night my buddies and I were looking for a different dining experience in Central, so to Souvla we went.

The restaurant was located right in the heart of Lan Kwai Fong but not on the ground level, and with the kinda confusing entry points it can be quite a maze to get there. Souvla can be best described as a stylish restaurant with a deep, dark groove – something one wouldn’t expect from a Greek restaurant.

We started with a simple serving of pita – grilled flat bread to the uninitiated. The pita was served warm and fluffy, with a just a tinge of yeast. Powdery to the touch and light as air, it was quite a delight to go with the taramasalata (smoked roe with lemon and garlic). The creamy dip would have been a tad too fishy as a side dish, but with the pita it signalled a good start to the meal.

The slow cooked lamb with lemon greek yogurt was oh-so-very tender, which in my humble opinion matched up with my stellar experience at The Blue Butcher. There is a depth to the taste of the lamb that wasn’t over intense, so it blended rather well in our rather meaty dinner for the night.

The octopus sti kara – with lemon, parsley and rosemary – has a texture that was like chicken. It lacked that seafood tanginess that usually made one enjoyed grilled seafood, which was rather surprising if you ask me. The Greeks should, and could, do their seafood well.

All were redeemed in their next dish – the grilled prawns were undoubtedly the star of the night. Fresh with a crunchy texture served with just nice level of charred shell.

Verdict? Great Greek food finally hit Hong Kong and one can only hope more will take after Souvla. Up next on my to do list? To devour their “My Big Fat Greek Feast”.
