The One With National Day Fireworks At Harbour City

One of the many splendour of living in Hong Kong is to experience the ups and downs of this cosmopolitan city the way locals would. This could take many forms, from eating at a little known joint in Sai Ying Pun to getting the best deals off (fake) leather goods in Cheung Chau, I often try to steer off the tourist-trodden path and introduce my visiting friends the best my second-home city has to offer.

The fireworks on National Day certainly fit the bill. As we took our spot on the Harbour City rooftop, there was a hint of mainlander’s Chinese around! (I am only saying) Apart from that swaying men who camwhored the whole night and startled everyone with his totally unexpected snaps of the sky, the crowd for the night was certainly well behaved… with some eye candies to help me pass time :P

Introducing the contingent from Singapore for the night; Liping (my travel buddy whom explored half of Europe with me), Tony (the SQ pilot whom had the, ehem, privilege of sharing many of life’s best moments with me… over pints of beer!) and Lilin (the lucky, lucky girls whom learned about my many quirks by just traveling once with me… to Morocco).

Also, for the first time since my three years here in Hong Kong, I saw the Symphony of Lights which occurs every night at 8 p.m. It was ironic that the best view of Hong Kong can only be viewed in its full splendour from across the harbour… often called The Dark Side.

Some potato chips and beers later (oops!), the firework started!

Of course, the iPhone brigade was out in full force. I spotted many Samsung in the midst too.

Many a great shot were “spoilt” by camera-wielding, taller guys like this… but aww whom am I to complain?

All in all the fireworks seems even grander than the ones on July 1, though much could be said about the choice of music. I mean… I am sure Hong Kong could do better when it comes to songs appropriate for a fireworks night.

And then, some thirty minutes later, the splendid show came to an end with aplomb.

It was certainly a night to remember, well worthy of the throngs of undead we lost ourselves into on the way to the train station. Thank god for City Super shopping bag.

Until the next fireworks!

Thanks to Harbour City for their generous invitation to this fireworks party.
