The One With Jack Wills Hong Kong – Fabulously British & So Can You!

If you have yet to hear about Jack Wills Hong Kong, you are either living in caves cut away from human communications, or just not being on Facebook and Twitter enough.

Have you been tweeting and Facebooking more, I am sure you would have heard of the British brand, which has just opened its Asian flagship store not in one but TWO locations in Hong Kong; one in Causeway Bay and the other in Tsim Sha Tsui.

My first encounter with the brand was, surprisingly, not online. I work in Causeway Bay and on my way to feed my caffeine addiction every day, I will walk pass Jack Wills in the morning. In the beginning I was slightly intrigued by the tagline “Fabulously British” because to me that is ultra chick (think Nottinghill in London) but what could have been more out of place than the densely packed Leighton Road with its endless human traffic and buildings both new and old struggling for space?

I was in for a surprise. Instead of being a royal sore thumb, the iconic pink and navy striped building stood out like a majestic shopping oasis calmly amidst the craziness that was Causeway Bay. By then, I already knew about Jack Wills on Facebook and @jackwillshk. However it was this that sealed the deal for my affinity towards the brand.

Have you ever seen such gorgeous cupcakes? These darlings set up quite a stir among the online foodies, so it was with much anticipation that I went to their media/bloggers opening night on Dec 1.

Being a fashion event, I was determined to make a good first impression. A foodie do know how to dress up too, you know? Brown jacket from Zara, checkered shirt from McQueen, purple tie from DKNY, and my faithful battered jeans from Diesel. Preppy enough yet stylishly so. I think, and I hoped. LOL.

By the time we arrived, the party was already in full swing. Guests decked out not to kill but to impress nonetheless, and for once my worry on my outfit was worth the trouble. But you know what? If I start shopping at places like Jack Wills, I wouldn’t have to spend so much time pairing things together.

Everything about Jack Wills scream understated sophistication. If you know me long enough on this blog, you will not know me as a know-it-all fashionista. But even for the simple yours truly I stay away from clothes with large imprints of its brand logo, lest I made myself a free walking advertisement for them.

But not with Jack Wills. There is something refreshingly cool about wearing a pullover, a sweater or a cardigan stamped with its names. Perhaps it was a new brand at this part of the world, or because Jack Wills is often associated with hip students (hence “University Outfitters” as its tagline) so for the young and young-at-heart (like yours truly), this resonates. And it tells from the range of casual design but bold colour.

Like on these range of stationery. Pink has never been made so gender-friendly.

Jack Wills stamped on boxers. Now would it made people go “Oh Jack…” seeing them? LOL.

Shopping at Jack would be quite an experience too. I could almost imagine the brief for the designer assigned for this store – British, hip, cozy. It felt like walking into an enlarged boutique store, with it’s sweeping wooden staircase (Jack Wills comprises of two floors), warm lighting to flatter every curve, and this! The changing room. Oh. My. God.

How gorgeous, how thoughtfully done. Now this is what I imagined a real changing room is like (you know I read too much chick lits for my own good), not those sorry excuse of a cramped cubicle they called the “fitting room”.

Being this close to Christmas do something to people. Everyone exhaled a breathe of relief when temperatures dipped below 16 for the first time this year. Hello, winter, you are late but welcome back. It’s easy to understand why generally people are in a good mood (unless you are of one those poor winter-haters), and it showed at the opening party.

The Flipbook corner was an astounding success. I mean, okay, so it helped that the booth was manned by suspiciously British and beautiful… err, operators. That even the shiest of shy guests would step into the limelight for our six seconds (literally) of fame.

Like I did.

Oh, how fun. It’s a bit silly to imagine me dancing (on the spot) and strumming (an unplugged) guitar, but the result is nothing short of hilarious.

Now what foodie blog post would be complete without the obligatory mentions of food and drinks served? To be honest I thought the fashionistas attending such opening parties will abstain from food but would help themselves to the endless supply of champagne (with strawberries!) and beer.

But boy was I wrong! These fish chips (NOT fish and chips) were definitely a crowd favourite, and I was lucky to have taken this shot before the hungries descended on the crew.

Of the gorgeous cupcakes seen on Twitter, there wasn’t a whiff nor a sight. But we were offered a downscaled version of it, here.

Not as yummy, I would imagine, but hey! It’s PINK! And it’s BLUE!

Strolling around the store, I found a display set of clothes with just that kind of look I am trying very hard, to achieve and carry well.

A less formal jacket with crisp looking shirt, skinny tie and comfortable jeans. Okay, so now I know at least once place with the kind of things I was looking for.

Jack Wills Opening Night

Even before its opening night, Jack Wills has created quite a buzz online and had already built quite a fan base. The fashionistas happily argued the best pairing of this top and that bottom, and the non-fashionista (like me) opened our eyes to new possibilities for something new and edgy without the complication nor the fear.

Of that, Jack Wills has done it well, to spade. The price range is somewhat above average, so shop with care but have fun choosing.

Because I know I will.
