The One With Lamma Hilton Shum Kee – Hong Kong Seafood Galore

There are many places to go for seafood in Hong Kong. What with being surrounded by seas and being in such close proximity to China, it is hardly surprising that seafood in Hong Kong in generally fresh. More often than not you get to see the live version of your dish before it gets cooked.

My all time favourite restaurant for seafood is undeniably the Lamma Hilton Shum Kee located at Sok Kwu Wan in Lamma Island. Being a good ferry ride away from HK Island, there is something almost magical about the place.

But first, on to the food.

Deep Fried Squid with Spicy Pepper

Perfectly spiced and succulent to the crunch. The deep friend squid was perfect to go with a bottle of beer on a hot Sunday afternoon. The dish would have been even better had the squid been cut into smaller pieces.

Steamed Scallop with Mashed Garlic

The star of the afternoon. The danger about this dish comes in many forms; your scallop could be not fresh, you could have used too much garlic, or perhaps you used to much “tung fun” (or vermicelli). These were perfect; without a doubt the scallops were fresh and crunchy to the bite, but the amount of seasoning and toppings were just right. Definitely recommended.

Blanched Prawn

At times the best seafood comes in its simplest form, and this plate of fresh blanched prawns was a testament to that. There is a joy in sucking of the sauce of the heads (it could be an acquired taste, but I am nothing if not an adventurous foodie). I could almost call this finger food. You just can’t stop at one. Good with or without the sauce.

Fried Clam with Fermented Black Bean & Chilli

This was a bit of a disappointment, but I have had better in my previous visits. It could be unsettling when pieces of clams were smaller than the black bean, and if so many of the shells came empty. The black bean was quite overpowering too. I would have preferred my clams not to be seasoned to death.

Braised Bean Curd with Soy Sauce

We detoured a little from the set meal and ordered an extra bean curd dish. Nothing to shout about, though this went rather well with the (also uninspiring) plate of Yeung Chow Fried Rice.

By the way, yes, that’s Garreth Popcorn you see there in the back. We bought a pack of such goodness for the ferry ride and we can’t stop popping!

Okay, so the food wasn’t as good as my previous visits, but with a view like this, who would have the heart to complain?

Hop over for a lazy weekend afternoon. You’ll not regret it.
