The One With Hong Kong Ocean Park Halloween Bash

Every year my friends will want to go for Hong Kong Ocean Park Halloween Bash. Rumours were adrift that the bash is really scary, out of this world (pun intended) and superbly fun.

But like all good intentions with my dear friends, clashing schedule and pure misfortune prevented us from setting foot into the bash every October. However this year, thanks to a stroke of luck (actually, not really, it was a photo contest which actually was more pain than fun, but that’s another story), I got myself a pair of tickets to this year’s bash!

Because of the aforementioned photo contest, I got the tickets pretty late, and it wasn’t until the very last Saturday of the Halloween season when my better half and I managed to find time to head down to Ocean Park.

Like thousands of others. Oh my freaking God. Bloody hell, the tickets are not cheap, you know (even though mine were free). Where did these kids get the money?

Putting my fear of long queue and sweaty teenagers aside, I bravely ventured in. And up the mountain we went! It was my first time taking the cable car at night.

All was quiet in the journey up, save for the occasional whoops and cheer from passing cars. It was a perfectly romantic moment ;)

And then we arrived at the top, and stood undecided. Where the hell (again, pun intended) do we start?

So we started with the one nearest to us (we are nothing if not lazy) – the Paper Doll Paradise.

Perhaps it was my first “ride”. Or that I generally don’t do well with anything you can remotely describe as “scary” or “horror”. Sufficient to say it wasn’t a place you want to get in with your other half. I am sure no one was amused by my relentless squeals throughout.

I am not proud of it. I am just saying.

Next up, we went into my biggest fear, the Zombie Mayhem.

Despite its name, the attraction itself was quite fun. Armed with some laser gun, you get to kill zombies which (to my utter relief) were safely barricaded behind bars, crates and barrels. No risk of them biting and turning me into one of them.

And then, there was The Last Bus.

Easily the longest queue, ever. And the largest attraction. I was scared shitless. My other half started to laugh at my expense. Whatever la.

But actually the biggest fear for the night wasn’t one of the Halloween attraction. It was The Splash. Have you not heard of the latest, biggest and scariest ride of Hong Kong Ocean Park? No? This will give you an idea.

Yes, I rode the them thing. My legs turned to jelly when it was our turn to step into hell. But goddamnit, it was fun and adrenaline-fueled. So much so that as I tumbled down from the starry, starry sky to the gasping crowd below, I bellowed, again and again, “Happy Halloweeeeeennnn~~~~”.

I am cool like that.

As you walk around the park, there will be countless characters out to scare you, jumping out from shadow and skating down cemented road.

Here’s a zombified nurse.

Errr, a pig-headed soldier.

A scary Chinese deity (I am bad with Cantonese names!)

Instead of being scared, these girls seem to be thrilled to be taking photo with the good looking, errr, ghostly prince (?)

Now, this double-mouthed ghoul was an absolute roar. As the crowd patiently wait for their turn for the HTC 3D (which, by the way, was a good effort, but really not worth the long wait), this actor relentlessly entertained everyone with horror jokes, teases and posing for photos.

When you got tired of all the queuing, you can amuse yourselves with various entertainments big and small, like this Freaky Party of Halloween Republic.

All in all we spent some five hours at the park. We probably managed to do six of the available attractions, but by the end of it we were both all scared out, tired and hungry. As we make our way back to the living world, we both agree that the Hong Kong Ocean Park Halloween Bash is worth a revisit next year.

But only if we have the VIP tickets and cut the waiting time by at least ten times.

Thanks to Nuffnang HK for the complimentary tickets!

I had fun there last year since a whole group of us went & yup, VIP tickets are the only way to beat the crazy queues.
